Lymphoedema Assessment & Management

Lymphoedema Assessment & Management

Lymphoedema is caused by an obstruction or damaged lymphatic system, which leads to fluid retention.  It is often referred to as being either primary or secondary in respect of its formation.

Primary Lymphoedema is normally caused by congenital malformations (disease or physical abnormality) of the lymphatic system and may be present at birth or develop later in life such as in puberty or during pregnancy (linked to hormonal changes).

Secondary Lymphoedema is more common and tends to have developed when the lymphatic system has been damaged due to things like a past surgery or medical treatments (e.g., chemotherapy or radiation therapy for cancer).

General circulation problems such as venous insufficiency (leg veins not facilitating blood flow to the heart effectively), kidney disease, heart conditions, strokes all may inhibit the lymphatic system from functioning properly causing lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema physical symptoms include:

· Swelling within the body (usually the arm or leg, including fingers or toes)

· A feeling of heaviness or tightness in the effected area

· Restricted range of motion due to swelling

· Possible recurring infections

· Hardening and thickening of the skin (fibrosis)

There are a lot of treatment options available to assist with the management of Lymphoedema. However, not every treatment option will suit everyone therefore at Quintessential Care we work with you to come up with the very best solutions for you!
